TotalEnergies Charges Forward with Ethiopia’s First Public EV Station

TotalEnergies Marketing Ethiopia has taken a groundbreaking step towards a cleaner future, launching the country's first-ever fast-charging station for electric vehicles. Located at the company's Bole Road Service Station, this pilot project leverages TotalEnergies' experience in other African nations and aims to cater to a growing upscale market for electric vehicles.

“This EV fast charging station will serve as a momentous contribution to Ethiopia’s automotive industry,” declared Christophe Ferrand, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing Ethiopia. He emphasized the company’s commitment to “decarbonization of transport” and its focus on providing “more affordable, more reliable, cleaner and accessible” energy solutions. He  further highlighted the importance of charging infrastructure in fostering electric mobility, making TotalEnergies a pioneer in this space.

The initiative aligns with a broader trend across Africa. “The demand for supporting new types of mobility is growing on the continent,” stated Olivier Van Parys, Vice President Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. He praised Ethiopia’s proactive approach to electric mobility, allowing TotalEnergies to leverage its extensive network of service stations and partnerships to respond effectively. He also described the project as a “concrete example” of TotalEnergies’ ambition to be a leading player in Ethiopia’s energy transition.

The launch received praise from the Ethiopian government. Seharla Abdulahi, Director-General of the Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authority, applauded TotalEnergies’ commitment to renewable energy and emphasized the significant role the fast EV charging station can play in reducing air pollution. This development marks a significant step towards a cleaner future for Ethiopia’s transportation sector.
