Ethiopia to Build Africa’s Largest Airport

Ethiopia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DAR, an international consulting firm, to design its new $6 billion airport. The mega-airport, set to be the continent's largest, will be constructed in Bishoftu, Oromia region.

The airport, spanning 35 square kilometers, will have a capacity to handle a staggering 100 million passengers annually upon completion in five years. The first phase, focusing on a 60 million passenger capacity, will be followed by an expansion to accommodate over 100 million passengers.

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “This new mega airport will be a game-changer for Ethiopian Airlines and the entire African aviation industry.” DAR will be responsible for the detailed design, contractor selection, and project supervision.

Tariq Al Qanni, Director of DAR, expressed confidence in delivering an “iconic and functional airport” that will elevate Ethiopian Airlines to the top ten global airlines. The current Bole International Airport, operating at its maximum capacity of 25 million passengers per year, underscores the urgent need for this new infrastructure.

With this ambitious project, Ethiopian Airlines aims to solidify its position as a global aviation hub while contributing to Ethiopia’s economic growth.
