Ethiopia Observer: Go Back in Time

Sylvia Pankhurst founded the Ethiopia Observer, a journal of independent opinion, economics, history and the arts

Ethiopia Observer, a newspaper that ran for 18 years, from 1956 to 1974. The newspaper was founded by Syilvia Pankhurst after she accepted an invitation by Emperor Haile Selassie. She edited the newspaper for four years.

In 1935, Syilvia campaigned vigorously against the invasion of Ethiopia by Fascist Italy and founded The New Times and Ethiopia News to publicize the plight of the Ethiopians and other victims of fascism.

When she died on September 27, 1960, she was given a state funeral by the Ethiopian government in recognition of her service to the country.

When the Ethiopia Observer was established, during the first 4 years, it was published monthly and after that quarterly. The first five issue covers had pictures of paintings by Maitre Artist Afework Tekle.

If you are keen to find out what parts of Ethiopia was like in the 50s and 60s, archives of this publication can be find at
