Mark Suzman, the CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is currently in Ethiopia on a visit from April 22 to 26, 2024. His trip focuses on meeting with partners and grantees working on crucial issues like health and economic opportunities for Ethiopians.

This visit underscores the Gates Foundation’s commitment to collaborating with African communities and leaders. Suzman’s agenda includes engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, from government officials to healthcare workers and young entrepreneurs.

Through these interactions, he aims to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by partners in health, agriculture, gender equality, and financial inclusion. The visit also serves to strengthen existing partnerships and solidify the Gates Foundation’s dedication to supporting Ethiopia’s development efforts.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced its continued focus on supporting Ethiopia’s development efforts. The foundation’s work aligns with the Ethiopian government’s priorities, particularly in areas like gender equality (including maternal and child health), education, agricultural productivity, financial inclusion, and sanitation.

This focus on African-led solutions is a cornerstone of the Gates Foundation’s approach. They provide support to local partners whose innovative ideas have the potential to improve health outcomes, empower families, and address critical challenges across the continent. This commitment is reflected in their pledge to allocate over $7 billion by 2026 to support African countries and institutions developing solutions for hunger, disease, poverty, and gender inequality.

The foundation’s dedication to East Africa is further evidenced by the recent opening of a regional office in Nairobi, Kenya. This office will expand and enhance the Gates Foundation’s work in healthcare, agriculture, and information technology across the region.

Since its first grant in Ethiopia in 2000, the Gates Foundation has established a strong presence in the country. The 2012 opening of an office in Addis Ababa solidified their commitment. Since then, they have collaborated with the Ethiopian government, donors, private sector entities, and civil society organizations to improve the lives of Ethiopians, particularly in the poorest communities.
